Building Connections Over Chasing Competition

Building Connections Over Chasing Competition

Sometimes the best way to grow isn't by racing everyone else but by leaning on the people around you. Connections, conversations and collaboration can open doors you didn't even know were there.

When you're constantly competing with every other business in your industry, you're going to feel exhausted. You see what everyone else is doing and wonder if you're falling behind. Then there's the old saying, "keep your friends close and your enemies closer," referring to your competitors. But in business, that doesn't always hold up. Watching everyone else too closely keeps you stressed and distracted. You may even feel like you're stuck in an endless loop of comparison. Building relationships and learning from others can get you further than rivalry ever will. It'll also make running a business feel a little less lonely.

Here are four ways to shift your mindset from trying to beat others to growing smarter instead.

1. Flip the competition script

The first step to go about this is to stop seeing other businesses as threats and start seeing them as sources of inspiration or potential collaboration. Don't get it mistaken because this doesn't mean you should ignore what makes your business unique. It means recognizing that someone else's success doesn't take away from yours.

One way to start is by identifying a business you admire and asking what they're doing well. Think about what you can learn or even improve in your own approach. Another way is to think about potential collaborations, like co-hosting an event or sharing resources. Don't be afraid to reach out just to have a conversation and exchange ideas. We promise you they're more likely to be friendly than not. Flipping the script changes how you spend your energy. Be curious and opportunities will come.

2. Build relationships, not rivalries

Connections matter. There are countless opportunities for support, advice and collaboration that simply wouldn't exist if you stayed solely in competition. If someone helped you out, you'd likely return the favor, right? That's exactly the goal of building business relationships. Join local or online communities where people in your field gather. You also want to offer help before asking for anything in return. Relationships always start off from a small gesture.

The beautiful thing about this is that relationships like these usually blossom over time. Relationships can also provide perspective. They show you that other business owners face the same struggles and challenges you do. You're not alone and knowing that can give you the confidence you need to get over the next obstacle.

3. Learn without comparing

It's easy to get tangled in comparison. If you see another business doing well and immediately measuring yourself against them, there's no winning for you. There is and always will be ups and downs for any entrepreneur. There's no avoiding it. Instead of judgement, approach it with curiosity. Watch what others are doing and notice what works. An idea might spark from this and like we mentioned earlier, you're always welcomed to ask questions. You're not copying anyone. You're more like collecting puzzle pieces for your own picture.

Learning without comparing lets you absorb lessons while keeping your confidence intact. And the fun part? You get to mix and match those puzzle pieces, experiment with your own ideas and see what ultimately clicks. You might succeed, fail or get inspired in unexpected ways. They may be your competition, but they can also be your greatest source of insight.

Community and collaboration aren't about instant results. They rarely ever are. It's similar to a garden where you plant the seeds, nurture them and watch them grow over time. Worrying about beating another competitor today won't get you anywhere if that's the mindset every day. It's very draining. Focusing on building connections instead lowers your stress and creates a solid foundation for long-term growth. Sometimes the most surprising opportunities bloom when you least expect them, like finding a hidden flower in your garden you forgot you planted.
