Better Ways to Move Through Creative Blocks

Better Ways to Move Through Creative Blocks

Feeling stuck happens more often than people admit. This is especially true for business owners who are always creating content, making decisions and showing up for themselves. Most people think they need better ideas, but sometimes they just need better conditions for those ideas to show up. Creativity is power, but with that comes expectations and the risk of burning out if you don't give yourself space to think. So don't try to force it. Let it come naturally to you as we explore three practical ways to get back on track with your thinking cap.

Here are three strategies to reclaim your creative flow.

1. Let creativity find you instead of chasing it

Trying to chase ideas is exhausting. Sometimes it even feels like grabbing the leash of a running dog. A surprising way to let creativity find its way to you is simply giving your brain space to surprise you. That means letting your mind rest. Just by doing something relaxing like taking a stroll, doodling away or just stepping aside from your work area, your creativity will reappear.

When you remove pressure, your nervous system relaxes and your best ideas tend to surface when you least expect them. This works because there's no stress or urgency clouding your focus. You're creating room for inspiration to show up naturally and not just forcing it out of hiding.

2. Start ugly, finish strong

Fellow perfectionists know the struggle of trying to get everything exactly right. But for some things, that's just not realistic. That's why perfectionism can be a creativity killer. The trick is to start. Just start. Start messy, rough and ugly! Write drafts you'll never show anyone or record a half-baked concept. Get the ball rolling and forget about the polish.

Once you have something in front of you, your brain shifts into problem-solving mode. It's amazing how fast ideas grow once they're out of your head. It's no longer a lingering thought, but something real you can work with. Starting ugly actually works, and sometimes your best work and ideas come straight out of the mess.

3. Reset your rhythm

If you've been tackling harder tasks earlier in the day and then try to switch into creative mode, it can feel extra difficult. That usually just means your energy is low. Pay attention to your natural flow and how you feel during different times of the day. Notice when you're most alert and inspired. Then simply schedule creative work during those windows. Your brain can't go from spreadsheets to creative brilliance on command, at least without a breather and maybe a snack.

For many people, that's in the mornings. For others, they hit their stride late at night. Track your energy for a few days and see where your creative sweet spots are hiding. We promise that you'll feel way more inspired when your work lines up with your rhythm. Suddenly, creativity feels easier instead of forced. An energized brain just works better!

Those moments of creative blocks are a totally normal part of creating, especially when you're juggling a business. It's also normal to feel the need to always be creating and innovating. Letting ideas find you, starting imperfectly and working with your rhythm will help you reclaim your creative flow without forcing it.

Creativity isn't a constant state, it's a cycle. Every low point can lead to a fresh wave of ideas. One extra tip: keep a "creative ideas notebook" handy because inspiration loves to show up at random moments. Personally, I have all my ideas jotted down on a notes app on my phone. Even on days where you're not working, ideas might hit and you won't want to forget them. Keep on creating!
